Racing

Kara Lilly is a professional cyclist on a wild journey to see how good she can become.

Born in Toronto and raised on the bike in Calgary, Kara is a small Canadian rider who packs a punch. She has raced across Europe and North America, delivering top 15 results in national level events, podiums in regional pro fields, and two provincial championship titles (criterium and road series). Kara has competed in some of the most prestigious events on the North American UCI calendar, including Joe Martin, Tour of Gila, Colorado Classic, and Redlands.

Kara currently races for Atlanta Rise, an NCL Racing team based in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2023 she raced for Instafund UCI Continental Pro Cycling team. From 2021 – 2022 she raced for the elite criterium squad, Automatic Abus.

How It Started

One year while looking for a new adventure to tackle, Kara stumbled upon Canmore’s 24 Hours of Adrenaline race, a 24-hour mountain bike event held annually in the Canadian Rockies. Despite neither owning a mountain bike nor knowing how to ride one, Kara signed herself up as a soloist.

Three months later, she’d bought a bike, learned how to ride it (sort of) and successfully finished the race, despite breaking her elbow the weekend before. To her surprise, she came in fifth! And she was hooked.

The following season, she returned to the event and won.

For love of the road

Kara then fell down the rabbit hole. In her second year Kara successfully defended her 24-hour solo title, won numerous long course events and placed sixth at Canada’s elite marathon mountain bike nationals. About this time she began to dabble in road racing and discovered she loved it.

The following year Kara found success committing to a full road season. She became provincial criterium champion, provincial road series champion and upgraded to cat 2. By the end of that summer, she found herself on a plane to Europe and competing in the Tour Cycliste Feminine International d’Ardeche in France, her first UCI stage race. She has been all-in on the pro road scene ever since and is now a cat 1.

What’s Ahead

Kara continues to compete on the pro road tour and work every day to be her best. She shares her journey and the lessons learned along the way in the hopes it will embolden more people to pursue their goals and dreams.
